Applying for our DAUGHTER'S SS Card!

I realized as I was leaving a voice mail for a friend while driving to the local SS office that my heart was pounding a bit harder and my throat was getting tight. I said into the phone - "I am just on my way to apply for Willow's Social Security Card, pretty exciting stuff." (meaning it sarcastically) And then I had to correct myself- "actually it IS really exciting" I said to both the voice mail and to myself.

I had to work hard to contain my emotions as I waited for them to call my number A205, even though I was the only one in the waiting area. When I got to the desk, the clerk asked what she could do for me and I said, "I am here FINALLY to get my little girl her social security card." I then added that I hoped I wouldn't start crying during the process. Poor clerk woman, she looked a bit confused. She probably thought I meant that I was finally getting the application done but what I really meant -- or rather what my head was confirming yet again to my heart- was YES!! I HAVE A DAUGHTER!!

It still amazes and puzzles me that my gratitude has so many layers and how these little, seemingly mundane, ordinary tasks take on so much more meaning to me and to us. There are so many layers and thankfully R. totally gets it too. When I called him he totally understood the big deal that this was and we talked like we always end up talking about what a wonderful little girl we have and how very, very, lucky we are to have found her.

Hugs to ALL!!

Catching Up
While it is so hard to believe that over a month (again) has past since my last very short post, what is more amazing to me as I sit and think about "what's new" is that there is so much Willow news to report.

As I mentioned in my last post, one of Willow's friends came and spent the night on halloween. This little friend is one we met in China and the girls see each other about every 2-3 months - although we are working to shorten that gap. Juliette is 4 mos older than Willow and Willow just adores her. I don't think I can capture in words the pure joy Willow expresses when she first sees "Ju-Ju" as she gets in our car at the train station. Her eyes get ENORMOUS and she looks from Juliette to me and back again as if to say "pinch me, I must be dreaming". I swear it is hard to imagine a larger display of wonderment and adoration. For Juliette's part, she's excited as well and it isn't long before the two of them are whooping it up in the back seat. Us Moms just laugh and smile as we try to catch up -but really who can concentrate (or wants to) when our two beautiful little ones are giggling their faces off!! These friendships formed through our adoption are just another unexpected joy -something I never really thought about as we waited- and one we feel so grateful for. We hope to see all of the girls together over the holidays.

Speaking of friends, we have been trying to do a better job of making time to get together with our oldest and dearest this holiday season. We are so fortunate to have many of our good friends close by and we got together with some for Thanksgiving and a week later too for holiday baking at our house.
We've always hosted Thanksgiving at our house and over the years the players have changed some as folks got married, had kids and started their own traditions or moved away. But we can always count on Darin and, for the last several years, Tom and Jen F. Tom & Jen have 2 of the most beautiful and sweetest girls on earth. In years past, the girls stayed behind at grandparents while Mom and Dad slipped away later in the night for "seconds" at our house. This year the girls came along!!! Willow was in her glory as she led them all around playing with her toys or just being really silly. At one point, while the grownups were still relaxing at the dining table Willow, with the help of her two older friends, entertained us by coming in repeatedly with various stuffed animals stuffed up under her dress!! Not sure where this idea came from but she thought it was a riot and I have to say I agree.

The day after Thanksgiving we went and picked up our Christmas tree and by the week after the whole house was pretty much decorated. We had our mistletoe and our countdown to Christmas sign hung and the advent calendar I ordered arrived just in time to begin a new tradition on December 1st.

Willow is ready to decorate the tree.

The Advent Calendar
I knew when I put a few chocolates in the calendar that it would be a success but nothing could have prepared me for the absolute sheer thrill that Willow gets out of opening the door every night. I hope we'll have a chance to get it on video because you really have to see it to believe it.

We open a door after dinner every night and she usually starts talking about it when she wakes up in the morning. (it has proved a pretty good motivation-when needed- for making "good choices" throughout the day) As I mentioned earlier, what transpires when dinner is finished and we head into the room where the opening takes place is truly amazing to R and I. I am so glad that Papa has been here to share in it. As we search for the door with the day's date Willow is very focussed and serious but once we find it her body is as tense as I imagine the body of one who is being struck by lightning would be. She does not want to be the one to actually open the door and while we each take turns peaking in she is beside herself at times bouncing up and down, covering her eyes or literally climbing from one of us to the other by way of our backs if you can envision that. It is really something. Finally when she can take it no more she tells me to open the door and we all hoot and howl like it is the winning lottery ticket.

One funny story about the calendar. I had strategically placed the surprises with certain expectations in mind -visions really -of my perfectly sweet little girl being thrilled with each surprise and R and I watching as she enjoyed each one to the fullest possible extent before turning to us and saying "you are the best parents EVER and when I grow up I shall write a book to tell everyone about my wonderful childhood recalling in exact detail every holiday tradition, magical family outing, and my whole charming daily life -- a childhood that, of course, became the foundation which would later enable me to solve world hunger, create peace in the mid east and cure cancer." Ok, so now you know where my head was at.

So, the night we were to begin the calendar Willow and I put up some of those gel decorations on the windows. There would be some in her calendar in the days to come and the thought was that if we did these together she'd instantly recognize them and skip merrily away from the calendar to install hers all by her big girl self and it would be a big hit. Well, a bit later we started for our first night of the calendar. To Willow's complete and utter joy there was a chocolate Polar Bear waiting. Remember that Willow had ZERO sugar until just a week before her 2nd birthday and very little candy or ice cream since. So this chocolate bear was a pretty big deal. It was all of an inch and a half tall and I think it took her an hour to eat it. Giggling the whole time.

Explaining the Advent Calendar -- "one door at a time"

The next night, having now a better understanding of what was in store for her, Willow was filled with anticipation the way I described earlier. We went through all the the ceremony, the peaking, the whispering, the shrieking of the adults. Finally the door was opened and Willow stared at the contents with a puzzled expression - "go ahead honey", I said, " take them out (they were window gel decorations) you know what those are..." You can imagine my surprise when my sweet little love nugget yelled NO THANK YOU Please!! and started stuffing them back into their little compartment. So much for my Rockwell moments. But really it was pretty funny. She is teaching me new things everyday. This is going to be a very special Christmas!!

Love to All,
XO

I'll have to be more specific

When saying... "time to put on our Socks and Shoes!!"

For about a week now W. has been putting a sock on her hand. The first time she did it, she found a sock on her own somewhere, put it on and then showed it to me -- GLOOOOBB (glove) she said with a big canary eating grin. Since then she'll ask me for a sock in the morning, before nap time, at night before bed and so on. She wears it everywhere-- to the market, to school etc. At first, I thought she may have learned about this at school but by the look on the teacher's face when W. arrived for school wearing it proudly I could tell this was not the case. Still I asked the teacher to be sure and was told this was not something they're doing. Hmmmm.

As for the shoes, for sometime now if my shoes or even R's are around she will put them on and shuffle around the house in them. I hope this is not an indication of how fast she intends to grow up!!! She is already moving to fast for us but we are enjoying every single second of it!!

Hope everyone out there is enjoying the weekend!!
XOXOXO

Growing Up Way Too FAST!!

So our little baby girl is starting to sound so much more like a girl and (sniff, sniff) a lot less like a baby!! Yesterday she awoke with her mind on breakfast and when I walked into her room she said a very enthusiastic Hi!! It was so clear and did not have a hint of Baby! I said Hi Back and then she stood up and said Egg!! Again, very clearly and with lots of enthusiasm. Before I could respond she added "Pancake....Nana". OK, not complete sentences but her tone and her pronunciation we're so spot on my jaw dropped. She has also taken quite a liking to the term "Cool" and she drags it out to 2 or 3 syllables most of the time and she uses it appropriately like when we arrive at school or find a caterpillar in the yard or most recently when watching Grandma open up her birthday gifts.

Tonight, we had a bit of trouble at the dinner table involving bubble making and a drinking glass. When reminded that this was not what we do - there was, let's say, some resistance. This led to Me turning my little Munchkin's high chair around and letting her know that she could rejoin dinner when she was ready to behave nicely. Within about 1 second of me finishing this statement I heard the sweetest sounding "MahhhhMahhhhhh" emitting from behind the chair - R. just about sprayed Pepsi from his nose. She is dangerous this one!!

Yes! NO! Yes, Yes, NO! & More Fun With a 2 Year Old!!

Presenting "Twinkle, Twinkle" Willow Style

Baking Get Well Cookies for Papa!!

Well, It has been a really long time since I caught up on posting. We had two nice summer vacation weeks away from home, a wonderful Birthday party for Willow's 2nd Birthday, a great visit from Papa and Cousin Maddy (aka May May), a fabulous time at the town Labor Day Parade with lots of our friends and we started pre, pre-school (aka shuellll!!) I'll post some new pictures from all of these great times.

Willow has grown so much in every way since I last wrote. She continues to amaze and thrill us. Just yesterday R. said to her, "Every time I look at you I just can't help but smile." And it is so true. Sure, she has her moments. For example, there are certain times when she really, really bucks against authority. Usually this results in her either tossing down an object hard - like a cup or toy or yelling Mahh!! at the top of her lungs and then looking away in disgust. It always passes within a minute or two and sometimes it is still so hard not to laugh. She is also very good at changing the subject when she is being corrected- R. laughed right out loud the other night at dinner when she did this. She is becoming quite the little negotiator. She also loves to switch her answers repeatedly when asked a direct yes or no question - like are you finished with this? She'll say YES! NO! Yes! Yes!! NO-O-O ! she gets a big kick out of that one. Oh and the best is the slow motion No-o-o-o-o-o-oo- with eyes closed while turning her head slowly from one side to the other.

Willow started "school" in early september. She had very little trouble adjusting. From day 1, she walked right into the classroom without looking back. Only once or twice has she called for me or tried to come back out of the class. She loves it. One of her good friends, Mia, is there with her and she has made several other new friends. During the phase in for school the parents stayed in the school (outside the classroom) just in case. I would often peek in and see Willow enjoying a snack or playing on the floor. Once when I peeked, I saw her trying to comfort a little-er girl who was crying and it just melted me. From the beginning, we noticed how wonderfully compassionate our little girl is and I have to say there are few things that I have witnessed in this life that have moved me as much. She is a very giving little spirit.

Willow is pretty much saying all words these days. She repeats the last word of every phrase she hears and has started linking words together. She still loves dancing with us but also really loves dancing by herself now too. Yesterday, Uncle Jack brought his guitar and Willow danced all around while he played - very cute!! She is into pretty much everything I do in the kitchen and has been for a while. She helps me marinate (flipping Tofu pieces), helps her Dad make pancakes, and recently she even baked get well cookies with me for Papa. She kneaded, rolled and cut the cookie dough! She also continues to love nature and all wild creatures. We found a caterpillar recently and we've been tracking him regularly around the yard.

Well, I am out of time for now- she just woke up!! With our school schedule we're down to one nap a day and today it was a short one!!

Top SN Agencies - For My Friends at CAT!

Hey all,
As you all know, I posted a question on the CAT Forum asking people for recommendations regarding agencies we might consider if we were to adopt again. (just thinking about it for now....;-) )Below you will find the results with nearly 30 responses in, BAAS seems to be by far the Agency to go with. Sorry to drag you over here but I have been completely flooded with requests for the results and wanted to make sure everyone received the info. RQ has that 60 second rule and unfortunately/fortunately I don't get a lot of uninterrupted time with a 2 yr old running around. I hope you find this helpful - I sure did!!

Best wishes,
M.
P.S. the formating is not working well. Hopefully you can figure it out. If an agency like CH shows 0011 That means 0 Glowing, 0 Satified 1 neg. 1 switched. BAAS had just 10 Glowing.
